Stay Fit, Stay Hydrated: How Proper Hydration Fuels Your Intense Activity
Hello dear fitness enthusiasts! Hydration is arguably as important as your workout regime, yet it’s frequently overlooked. Whether you’re a seasoned workout buff or a rookie trying to build better health, focusing on hydration should be a priority.
The human body is, surprisingly, around 60% water, and this water plays a vital role in almost every bodily function you can think of. This includes digesting food, regulating body temperature and even supporting the health of your joints. So clearly, hydration is vital. Especially when you’re into high-intensity workouts or strenuous activities.
Understanding Your Body’s Need For Hydration
Before we can understand how to hydrate properly, it’s crucial to fully comprehend why our bodies need water in the first place.
Water is the building block of life that keeps our cells healthy and functioning correctly. During a strenuous workout, your body sweats to maintain a stable core temperature. However, this process leads to water loss, and if not adequately replaced, it can lead to dehydration. Dehydration, if severe, can impact your workout performance and have serious health repercussions.
To avoid these complications and to help build better health, it’s crucial to keep yourself hydrated.
Hydrating Before A Workout: The Golden Rule
You’ve probably heard the saying “preparation is key,” and I cannot think of a more fitting occasion to apply this saying than this one. Prime hydration starts long before your workout begins.
Your hydration goal should be to start exercising while already well-hydrated. It’s recommended to drink about 500ml of water approximately two hours before a workout. This gives your kidneys enough time to process the water, hydrating your body, and also allows time for you to expel the excess water before you start your workout.
Don’t Forget the Electrolytes
Besides water, your sweat also contains electrolytes, and these are essential for your body’s proper function. When hydrating, consider drinks that contain electrolytes. These could be sports drinks that contain sodium and potassium or natural options like coconut water.
But do remember, if your workout routine is less than an hour long, sticking to water rather than sports drinks should be your preferred choice. Sports drinks are best suited for longer, more intense workouts or high endurance sports.
Hydration Doesn’t Stop at Water
While the importance of drinking adequate fluids cannot be emphasized enough, it might be heartening to know that hydration doesn’t stop at water alone. High-water-content foods also contribute significantly to your daily water intake.
Fruits and vegetables, like watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, and lettuce, all pack large quantities of water. Blending these items for a smoothie or incorporating them into meals can significantly contribute towards maintaining adequate hydration levels.
Remember to Hydrate After Your Workout
After an intense workout, your body needs to replenish the fluids lost during the exercise. Ensuring you hydrate post-workout helps your body recover and prepares it for your next session. A general rule of thumb is to consume 500ml-1L of water for every hour of intense activity.
It’s equally essential to listen to your body and understand your hydration needs. Factors such as weather, workout intensity, your weight, and even your gender can influence how much water you need.
Wrapping Up
Proper hydration is a sure-fire way of ensuring that your body functions at its peak capability. Remember, feeling thirsty is already a signal of mild dehydration, so don’t wait for your body to give you the signal. Stay on top of your hydration game, especially during intense activity, and your body will thank you in the long haul.
